BANGKOK (FIBA U19 World Championship for Women) - Twice defending champions the United States rode on their rivals' profligacy in scoring to post a 75-56 win over Russia in Group F of the eight-final round on Tuesday.
The result, which left both teams locked at 4-1 win loss record, thus handed Russia their first defeat in this competition.
Russia did rather well to fight back to take a marginal lead at 45-44 after having allowed the Americans to call the shots till then, with about five minutes left in the third quarter.
Thereafter, the Europeans played within themselves and with cohesion, but fumbled time and again in converting their plays into scoring.
The US, meanwhile, kept it simple and converted the chances that came their way and broke away into 18-3 run in either side of the third quarter break, and then built on it win by 19 points.
The Russians were a woeful 3/19 in field attempts and drew a blank in seven three-pointer attempts in the fourth quarter.
In all, Russia went 26% in the field against the US' 37%.
Nnemkadi Ogwumike had another field day for the US with a double-double - a game-high 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Shenise Johnson collected nine rebounds - eight of them in defence - to go with her 11 points. Skylar Diggins and Samantha Prahalis had 10 points each.
Russian coach Olga Shuneykina used all her players and all of them scored, but none in double figures.
